Curriculum Offerings and Course Description

SCIENCE COURSES

Three years of science are required for graduation. Biology is required of all students. Four years of science are highly recommended for all who are qualified.

BIOLOGY HONORS #10116 1 Credit
The pace of this course, open to sophomores and select freshmen, is faster and the content more intense than Biology A. Prerequisite: 3.3 GPA (for Sophomores).
BIOLOGY A #10124 1 Credit
Emphasis is on the unity of the molecular, cellular, and organism levels. All human systems are studied. Open to sophomores with at least a 75th percentile reading and composite score on Explore exam.

BIOLOGY B #10133 1 Credit
This course, slower in pace and less intense than Biology A, is open to sophomore students below 75% in reading or composite on Explore exam. Reading and Math skills are reinforced.

BIOLOGY ADVANCED PLACEMENT #10416 1 Credit
This course includes topics regularly covered in college level biology. The focus of this class is on biochemical and molecular basis of life. After showing themselves to be qualified on the Advanced Placement Exam, some students, as college freshmen, are permitted to undertake upper level courses in biology or register for courses in which biology is a prerequisite. Students wishing to enroll in this course must have completed three years of science including Honors Biology with a grade of at least B and Honors Chemistry. Students must have a GPA of 3.3 or above.

PHYSICAL SCIENCE #10213 1 Credit
This course is an introduction to physics and chemistry. It proceeds from a survey of the methods of science to an exploration of dynamics, forms of energy, matter, and changes in matter. This class is offered at the sophomore or junior level for students who have taken Pre Algebra and Biology B.

CHEMISTRY ADVANCED PLACEMENT #10226 1 Credit
This course is designed to be the equivalent of a general college chemistry course. This class may enable a student to begin in a second year college course in Chemistry. Topics such as the structure of matter, kinetic theory, chemical equilibrium, and thermodynamics will be presented. Requirement: Completion of Chemistry Honors with at least an A-, completion or concurrent enrollment in Honors math. Students must have a GPA of at least 3.8.

CHEMISTRY HONORS #10234 1 Credit
This is an elective course for sophomores, juniors, or seniors who have completed Honors Biology. Prerequisites: A GPA of at least 3.6 and concurrent enrollment in Honors math.

CHEMISTRY A #10244 1 Credit
This course is an elective for those students who have completed Biology. All topics required for college Chemistry are covered. Prerequisites: Completion of Biology and concurrent enrollment in A level math.

CHEMISTRY B #10253 1 Credit
This course is an elective for juniors or seniors who have completed Biology. The pace is slower and content less intense than Chemistry A. Prerequisite: Completion of Algebra (any level) and concurrent enrollment in B level math.

PHYSICS C ADVANCED PLACEMENT #10426 1 Credit
A.P. Physics C is a calculus-based course designed to be the equivalent of a first-semester college physics course for engineers. Topics covered include aspects of Classical Mechanics. Includes definition of concepts, development of problem solving/analytical skills, laboratory work, developing research and lab reports, making presentations, solving problem sets, tests, and quizzes. Prerequisites: B in Algebra 2/Trigonometry H, Trigonometry-Analytic Geometry or College Algebra H, and current enrollment in Calculus. B in Honors Physics, A in Physics A or a B in A.P. Chemistry. GPA of 3.6.

PHYSICS HONORS #10425 1 Credit
This is an elective course for those students who are interested in engineering, medicine, or science, and qualify for a more rigorous advanced course. Areas of study include motion, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, light, and selected topics from modern physics. Some computer-based applications are included in the course. TI 82 or TI 83 graphing calculator is required. Prerequisites: Enrollment in or completion of Algebra 2/Trigonometry H, Trigonometry Analytic Geometry, or College Algebra H and a GPA of 3.3 is required.

PHYSICS A #10434 1 Credit
This is an elective course for those students who are interested in engineering, medicine, or science and/or are following the traditional science curriculum of biology, chemistry and physics. Areas of study include motion, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, light, and selected topics from modern physics. Some computer-based applications are included in the course. Prerequisites: Enrollment in or completion of Algebra 2A and GPA of 2.4 or greater.

PHYSICS B #10443 1 Credit
This course is slower in pace and less intense than Physics A. Prerequisites: Successful completion of or concurrent enrollment in Algebra 2B and GPA of 2.0.

HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY HONORS #10455 1 Credit
This is an elective course for juniors and seniors who have completed Biology and Chemistry.
It is designed for students interested in a career in Biology or the allied health professions. Cat dissection and other dissections are required. There is an optional field trip to view human dissection. Prerequisite: B in Biology A, GPA of 3.3 and approval of course instructor.

HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY #10454 1 Credit
This is an elective course for juniors and seniors who have completed Biology and Chemistry.
It is designed for students interested in life sciences or the allied health professions. The major emphasis is on anatomy with minor emphasis on physiology. Cat dissection and other dissections are required. There is an optional field trip to view human dissection. Prerequisite: C in Biology A, GPA of 2.4 and approval of course instructor.

HUMAN ANATOMY #10463 .5 Credit
This is a semester course for students interested in life sciences or allied health professions.
It is a hands-on, elective lab science course for juniors or seniors who have successfully completed biology and either physical science, physics or chemistry. This course is designed for the student who does not qualify for either full year course in Human Anatomy and Physiology (#10454 or #10455). The major emphasis is on Anatomy with minimal physiology. It may be taken in conjunction with another .5 credit science class to fulfill the science requirement. The technique of dissection will be employed, as dissection will be a requirement for this course. Prerequisite: Completion of Biology B and one other full-year science course; junior or senior status.

ECOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE #10314 .5 Credit
This is an elective, one-semester course for juniors and seniors who have successfully completed Biology and either Physical Science, Physics, or Chemistry. It is a multi-dimensional, technology-oriented course emphasizing Internet-related telecomputing projects, multimedia presentations, laboratory experiences, and one field trip per semester. The course focuses on contemporary ecological and environmental problems, issues, and concepts, and their relationship to the "quality of life" on our planet.

INTRODUCTION TO BOTANY AND ZOOLOGY #10324 .5 Credit
This one semester lab course is for juniors and seniors who have completed Biology and either Physical Science, Physics or Chemistry. One quarter will be spent studying plants, plant physiology, and plant anatomy. The other quarter will deal with animals, the phyla, and comparative Zoology. Dissection required.

FORENSIC SCIENCE #10334 .5 Credit
This elective semester-long course is designed as an integrative survey of modern forensic science, including both investigative techniques and the civic implications of crime science assessment. Students will apply their theoretical knowledge by analyzing actual cases, practicing modern forensic investigation techniques and solving simulated crimes throughout the semester. A cumulative project involving either a portfolio or crime scene assessment will be required of all participants.

ASTRONOMY #10914 .5 Credit
This is a three-week lab elective course held only during the summer that can be applied toward a student’s science requirements. This course introduces a student to the world of astronomy through the study of physics. Computers will be used to process data and do research using the Internet. A graphing calculator such as the TI-83 is recommended. The use of telescopes will be explored but no one is required to have one. One year of high school Science and Algebra I is required.
