Marian Catholic High School's physical education department has recently introduced computer technology as a springboard into the new millennium. The school has invested in a computer-based physical assessment program that will assist students in evaluating their strength, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness.
Each student enrolled in physical education will be tested on the HealthFirst Corporation's TriFit 600. A data-based software program records the students' cardiovascular fitness levels.
Additional software programs assist individual students in formulating a daily exercise program to improve strength, flexibility and fitness levels. This daily schedule, combined with a nutrition and meal planning program, will provide students a lifelong philosophy for a healthy lifestyle.
Marian Catholic is the first private school in Illinois to implement the TriFit 600 and its accompanying assessment program.
Students in health classes will answer questions on a series of health risk questions. Their answers will be compared to a set of national norms. Each student will receive immediate feedback concerning their risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, stress and depression.
The TriFit 600 is capable of printing a 22-page report for each student. The student records will be maintained through their senior year.
When implemented, the use of the TriFit 600 should show that 15 to 20 minutes of physical a day can make a big difference in one's self-esteem and approach to a healthy lifestyle.
