 Registration

Students from more than 70 communities in Illinois and Northwest Indiana combine to form an ethnically and culturally diverse student body with the common goal of academic excellence. As a result, admission is competitive. Interested 8th grade students are encouraged to obtain information early and MUST take the placement examination offered in January.

Admission Policy
Priority for acceptance is given to incoming freshmen coming from Catholic schools, students w/siblings currently attending MCHS and children of alumni.

Marian front entranceAdmission & Testing Standards

All prospective freshman students are required to take the High School Placement Exam offered at Marian. The next exam for the 2008– 2009 school year is scheduled for January 12, 2008 at 8 a.m.

All students who plan to attend to Marian must be present for this exam. Results from the 2008 test will be mailed on or about February 15.

The required entrance exam for the
2008 - 2009 school year will be the
STS / High School Placement test. For further information about the STS (HSPT) test, please click here. A writing sample is required of all students, an essay to be written during the STS (HSPT) testing period. Paper will be provided. The math portion of the test does not allow a calculator.

For our January 2008 testers, the average entrance score for admitted students will continue to reflect scores that indicate college preparatory readiness. We will, however, rely on strong elementary school faculty and principal recommendations for those good students with a positive attitude who may have difficulty testing. Personal interviews with the student and family, in some cases, may be required.

We realize that maintaining / raising the entrance standards can create some tension for those seeking admission to Marian Catholic, and that holding to more selective standards may decrease the enrollment for the Class of 2012. To maintain the integrity of our college preparatory program, however, our Admissions Committee believes that such a step is critical in order to better serve our students.

Formal Acceptance Criteria into Marian Catholic

Educational Achievement as Primary

  • All unconditional acceptances must give evidence of ability to successfully complete the college preparatory program at Marian Catholic on the basis of the composite score of the Placement Exam, a score that is a measure of both ability and achievement.
  • All accepted students must successfully complete the elementary education in an accredited elementary school and evidence ongoing achievement at a college preparatory level as indicated by testing and grades.

Subsequent to Evidence of Academic Achievement

  • Priority is given to practicing Catholic students in Catholic grade schools.
  • Family ties with Marian and family and student commitment to college preparatory Catholic education are factors in admission.
  • If the oldest in a family is starting the tradition of Marian Catholic education, preference will be given.
  • If space permits, priority will be given to those non-Catholic students who are currently attending a Catholic feeder school or other private school in the area.
  • If further space exists, other non-Catholic students are considered.

Parental Commitment

  • Support the Marian Catholic mission and philosophy, college preparatory philosophy, and school policies as outlined in the Handbook.
  • Pay a Non- Refundable registration fee of $250 at time of registration. This fee is returned only if the family moves or student fails to graduate from grade school with a good conduct record.
