The Athletic Initiative at Marian (AIM) moves forward
When the west campus acreage was purchased by the Dominican Sisters of Springfield and gifted to Marian Catholic High School, the potential for the school program was evident. Now, after a huge investment by the school community Marian is taking "AIM" to finish the project and build or improve west campus athletic facilities. AIM is a specific, target time and fund-sensitive effort that will truly make a good facility and outstanding one. Those taking "AIM" are those in the Marian community who have discovered the role that athletics plays in the development of young people and the spirit of a community. AIM is not a general school initiative. Led by former student athletes, their parents and fans, AIM will not be a piece of our Phonathon nor Marian general programs. Marian at large will continue to focus on other key elements of the school programs: academics, faith and service, arts and activities, through our Annual Fund. AIM was "kicked off" in June of 2002. At that time MCHS received a challenge grant from a Marian graduate offering to fund $1 for every $2 raised for AIM. Our anonymous benefactor offered to match up to $200,000. By raising $400,000 our anonymous alumnus donor would give us $200,000 for a total of $600,000. AIM pledges currently total $155,700. Of those pledges, $111,150 has been received. Under the conditions of the challenge grant MCHS will receive an additional $77,850 when all of the pledges are received. By raising $400,000 MCHS will be able to earn the full challenge grant of $200,000. In view of this, AIM continues to seek athletic-minded Marian supporters to grow AIM contributions and realize the full $200,000 of the challenge grant. MCHS thanks AIM Co-chairs, John Holecek '90 and Mike Prior'81, for their leadership and support of AIM. Thanks also to Ed Kmak '89, Dan Miller '87 and Dwight Snow '87 for their efforts to tell the story and secure AIM donations from former teammates. The first two Tail Power Classic golf outings have earned a total of $14,500 for AIM. These two events have provided a day of golf, fun and camaraderie for so many. Sincere thanks go to Jim Dee '80, Tim Swanson '86 and Ed Ziltz '80 for their efforts toward the success and growth of the Tail Power Classic. The Marian Catholic Alumni Association hosted the "Marian Madness" event (men's NCAA final game) and raised $5,200 for AIM. At AIM's conception it was decided that improvements to the west campus would occur as funds were received; safety concerns would be addressed first. Through AIM the following has been accomplished:
- Softball fencing purchased and installed, baseball field fencing repaired
- Twelve sets of bleachers have been purchased and installed for the tennis courts, freshman baseball field and the soccer fields
- Planning is underway to coordinate lighting needs for Spartan Stadium now and for the future
- An irrigation well has been installed, a pump and electric connections have been installed and bids are being sought for the irrigation system to serve the well. Major funding for the well is courtesy of a donor directing their gift to the well.
- State of the art facilities for our long jump and triple jump pits, including fencing, retaining walls and the runway approach have been installed
- New, upgraded digital scoreboard for Spartan Stadium was erected
Contributions for AIM are still being accepted. As indicated above, your gift can be enhanced by our challenge grant with $ 1 matched for every $2 raised. If you have any questions about AIM please call Pete Ruhl or Athletic Director Dave Mattio. AIM Sponsorships are available and the following may be considered: |
