Marian (7-5) falls to Notre Dame for second time
Marian Catholicīs defense put forth a valiant effort Friday night in Chicago Heights, picking up right where it left off after blanking Notre Dame in the second half of an earlier 17-14 CMC White loss to the Dons. But there were two things the Spartan defense couldnīt conquer on Friday night. Notre Dame tailback Dean Cademartori and the final dagger in an injury-riddled campaign. Marian lost its second starting quarterback in Mike Jedlicka (collarbone) at halftime and Cademartori rambled through the Spartan defense for two scores, as Notre Dame tripped Marian for the second time this season, 14-7, to eliminate the Spartans from the Prep Bowl playoffs. After a scoreless first half, Marian managed just a single first down in the second half. Meanwhile, Cademartori carried for the first time in the second half, rushing just nine times for 83 yards and scores of 2 and 1 yards. Marian had Donsī quarterback Dan Bukal on the run most of the night, as Steve Koenig, Ryan Vaughan, Dan Pack and Adam Pack combined for four sacks. Even when the Spartan defense buckled for Notre Dameīs only substantial drive of 89 yards for a score, Sean Waldron came up with a huge block of the conversion to help Marian maintain a 7-6 edge early in the fourth quarter. "I thought we were still in command," Waldron explained. "But I guess I was wrong. There were still more big plays to be made. We needed to step up. Itīs all about making plays, and as a team, we didnīt make enough big plays tonight." Trouble met Marian right away on the ensuing kickoff. A slip on naked turf meant the Spartans had to start on their own 4-yard line, then a fumble on the next play gave Notre Dame possession on the Marian 3. Three plays later, the Spartans (7-5) saw their final lead of the season disappear. The Spartansī fate was sealed when a Notre Dame punt was muffed for a turnover with 37 seconds to play. Chris Rodriguez moved from tailback to quarterback in Jedlickaīs spot in the second half. On just his fourth carry from that position, the fleet junior got loose for a 68-yard touchdown scamper. Tim Rhoadsī conversion boot gave Marian a 7-0 lead with 7:41 to play in the third quarter. Rodriguez finished with 102 yards on 15 carries, but the scoring play proved to be Marianīs lone first down of the second half. Along with the touchdown and muffed punt, the Spartansī second-half possessions consisted of three punts, a fumble and an interception. The offense sustained the most devastating blows via the injury bug this season. "Itīs very rare to have so many injuries for one team in a season," Waldron said. "You canīt do much about it except to try to step it up. We did that and gave a good effort, it just wasnīt enough tonight." Marian rushed for 134 yards compared to 116 on the ground for the Dons, marking the first time in 12 Spartans contests that the better rushing team did not prevail. Meanwhile, Marian completed just four pass on the night in 13 attempts. Andy Lietz caught a pair of passes for 14 yards, as Notre Dame ran off 67 total plays to just 38 for the host squad. |

Marian (7-4) topples Brother Rice to advance in Prep Bowl
Marian Catholicīs football team was outplayed for the better part of three quarters Friday night when the Spartans hosted Brother Rice in a Chicagoland Prep Bowl first-round contest. But a 21-0 first-quarter lead and a huge 48-minute effort from senior defensive end Adam Pack allowed the Spartans (7-4) to advance to the second round with a 21-14 victory. Pack had three-and-a-half sacks and forced a fumble to help Marian overcome three turnovers of its own. "We were able to keep up a good push and go after them," explained Pack, who led a solid effort up front from Ryan Vaughan, Dan Pack, Brian Aldeza and Adam Bohlen. "We made their quarterback go to the outside and we were able to get to him and force some bad throws. "The sacks really get me going. I think they make me keep playing and go a lot harder." Despite the early lead, it didnīt look like the Spartans would keep playing this season when the momentum shifted in the second half. Marian managed just one first down between early in the second quarter and the start of the final period. However, good pressure on the quarterback and a couple key plays by the Marian special teams allowed Marian to keep its season alive and go 3-0 all-time against the Crusaders (6-5). Helped by a strong wind that stifled Crusader punter Scott Hayden, Marian scored on its first three possessions. After a 35-yard connection from Mike Jedlicka to Ryan Williams (eight catches, 104 yards), Jedlicka scored on a 2-yard sneak behind Jon Scudella and Tim Kelly. The first of three Tim Rhoadsī conversion kicks gave Marian a 7-0 lead just 2:07 into the contest. Rice appeared to hold on Marianīs next possession, but Steve Koenig took a short snap on a fake punt and raced 48 yards for a 14-0 command. Another short punt set up Marian for a 1-yard Jedlicka sneak as the Spartan lead swelled to 21-0 with 2:56 to play in the opening quarter. Despite the huge differential, the contest was in doubt until the final minutes. Rice appeared set for a last-ditch possession when Marian punted with just more than three minutes to play. But Crusader Tom Dwyer fumbled the punt and Kyle Fischer pounced on the ball to keep possession in Marianīs hands. Tailback Chris Rodriguez eclipsed the 100-yard barrier (27 carries, 110 yards) on the final possession to salt away the remaining clock. Jedlicka finished 9 of 18 for 107 yards to balance a Marian ground game that produced 154 yards. The Spartan defense yielded just 90 yards on the ground in 34 attempts as six sacks totaled 45 yards in losses. Marian, which has advanced to the Prep Bowl title game in two of its last three appearances, will host Notre Dame (13-0 winner over St. Patrick) on Friday at 7 p.m. "This was tough to get up for right after losing in the playoffs," Pack admitted. "But now itīs easy to get up for games because it means we keep playing. This win is nice, but now we have to get ready to play the next game." |

A strong defensive effort led by senior linebacker Steve Koenig was not enough Saturday, as Marian dropped a Class 7A playoff contest to Morgan Park at Gately Stadium, 13-10. |

Marian (6-4) bounced from 7A playoffs by Morgan Park.
Despite several missed opportunities on Saturday when Marian Catholic battled Morgan Park at Gately Stadium in a Class 7A playoff opener, things looked good for the Spartans when the opened up a 10-0 halftime lead. However, the visitors ran out of breaks when the Mustangs (7-3) completed the comeback with 1:55 on the clock to advance to a second-round meeting against Stagg with a 13-10 decision. As it turned out, the same scenario on Marianīs first possession and Morgan Parkīs last proved to be the difference in the contest. A blocked punt by Steve Koenig on the gameīs opening drive had set up Marian at the Morgan Park 27. However, eight plays later Marian quarterback Mike Jedlicka was stuffed on a fourth-and-goal at the Mustang 1. Meanwhile, Morgan Parkīs Cinque Chapman scored on a fourth-and-goal from the Marian 1 for the eventual game-winner. Marianīs offense managed just 42 yards rushing and 94 passing for the day, as it was unable to capitalize on a pair of Spartan interceptions (Brad Wisowaty, Calvin Rowe), a poor Mustang punting game and five sacks of Morgan Park quarterback Andre Downing. "They didnīt do much different in the second half, we just didnīt execute today and we didnīt block very well," Jedlicka explained. "We had our chances when we were down on the goal line. I tried to sneak it in and just couldnīt get there. We just didnīt have very good efficiency on offense. "Then in the second half they just pinned their ears back and put on a lot of pressure. They have some very fast individuals on their defensive line." Marian managed just a single second-half first down and its only second-half snap that netted more than 6 yards (a 30-yard gain) eventually ended with a fumble and turnover. Despite the offensive woes, it appeared for much of the contest that a 26-yard field goal from Tim Rhoads and a 7-yard scoring toss from Jedlicka to Chris Rodriguez would be enough. Marian held after a Morgan Park first-and-goal at the 7 midway through the final quarter. Then the Spartans thought they had a winning 85-yard connection from Jedlicka to Rodriguez in the gameīs final seconds. However, Rodriguez was whistled for touching down his knee back at the Spartan 13- a phantom call according to the Marian sideline. "I didnīt really see the play well, but everybody on the sideline said his knee never touched down and `C-Rodī said it never touched down," Jedlicka said. In the end, Morgan Park caught the two biggest breaks- one on the officialsī call and the other on the play that set up the winning drive. Downing had thrown an apparent interception, but the ball slipped through the hands of a Spartan defender and into the hands of Mustang receiver Randy McCoy for a 42-yard gain. The setback, just Marianīs second against a Chicago Public League team in eight playoff meetings, spoiled a strong effort by the Marian defense. The five sacks, which came on combined efforts from Ryan Vaughan, Adam Pack, Adam Bohlen, Sean Waldon and Dan Pack, helped limit the Mustangs to 49 yards on the ground. Downing passed for 140 yards, but completed just eight of 24 passes. The Spartans (6-4) will now await an invite to the Chicagoland Prep Bowl Tournament, an event they won in 2000. |
