Football Coach Biography

Dave MattioA 1966 graduate of Marian Catholic, Dave Mattio has guided the Spartans to a 231-113 record (.672) in 32 seasons, making him the 18th winningest coach in IHSA history. In 1993, he led Marian Catholic to a 14-0 record and the Class 4A state championship, while guiding Marian to second place in Class 5A in 1999. The Spartans have made 18 overall IHSA playoff appearances under Mattio, including four visits to the semifinals. Marian also won the Chicagoland Prep Bowl championship game in 2000.

Although some of Mattio's tenure was spent with the Spartans as an independent, he has guided Marian to seven conference championships, including two in the Illini-8 Conference, four in the East Suburban Catholic Conference and one in the Catholic Metropolitan Conference Blue Division.

During Mattio's tenure, Marian has compiled a record of .500 or better in 28 of 32 seasons.

Mattio graduated from Northern Illinois University with bachelor's and master's degrees in Science of Education. He returned to Marian as an assistant coach in 1971 and became varsity head coach in 1976.

Married to Jody, the couple has five children: Jennifer, Jolie, Jeannie, Jamie and Joshua; and 12 grandchildren: Jeremy, Jordan, JoAnn, Madison, Noah, Cassidy, Gianna, Anthony,  David, Gabriella, Dylan and Austin.

Conference titles: 7 (1997- Catholic Metropolitan Conference Blue; 1994, 1993, 1991, 1990- East Suburban Catholic; 1980, 1976- Illini-8 Conference).
State playoffs: 18, including 2007, 2006, 2003, 2002, 2000, 1999 (Class 5A runner-up), 1997, 1995, 1994 (Class 4A state champions); 1993, 1992, 1991, 1990, 1988, 1987, 1986 (Class 5A semifinals); 1984, 1980 (Class 4A semifinals).

Marian has had three alums play in the NFL: Mike Prior with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Indianapolis Colts and Green Bay Packers; John Holecek with the Buffalo Bills, Atlanta Falcons and San Diego Chargers; and Rodney Harrison, former San Diego Charger and currently with the 2004 and 2005 Super Bowl champion New England Patriots.
