MARCH 3: For a second straight postseason, Marian Catholic put up a strong battle with top-ranked Simeon.

However, the end result was the same as the #1 Wolverines (26-3) eliminated the #9-seed Spartans in the Eisenhower IHSA 4A regional finals on Friday night, 56-43.

Only four Spartans scored for Marian (16-12), as Chase Adams led the way with 14 points and five assists. Warren Allen tallied 12 points with six rebounds, Malik Tidwell added nine points, six rebounds and two steals, and TeeAaron Powell chipped in eight points.

Marian cut a onetime 20-point deficit to 48-38 midway through the fourth stanza, but could get no closer. A senior class of Allen, Powell, Sean Taylor, Jesiah Jones, Joe Stith and Josh Blair finished the last two years with a combined 39 wins.

Three-point: Spartans Tim Jones and Joe Stith qualified for the IHSA State-level competition in Peoria on Thursday, making 11 and 10, respectively at the sectional.

Sophs: The Spartans (17-7) were thwarted by ESCC champ Benet, 43-34.

Frosh: Marian's A Squad dropped a 41-37 decision to Benet Academy, while the B Team fell to the Redwings, 71-41.
