in lopsided loss at Iowa City West

   DEC. 2: Disappointed with a 12-10 deficit after the first quarter on Friday, Marian Catholic had no idea how much worse it could get.

The visiting Spartans were soundly outscored in each of the final three quarters in a 72-42 nonconference whipping at the hands of Iowa City West. The host Trojans, featuring two of Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery's sons, looked impressive in their opener, while Marian fell to 3-2.

Most of the good news came off the bench for the Spartans, as Victor Akinyemi led the way with 12 points and four rebounds, Chris White added six points and a team-high five rebounds, and Malik Tidwell chipped in four points. Sean Taylor topped the Marian starters with six points, while Chase Adams dished out three assists, Brandon Hurt notched two steals and two assists, and TeeAaron Powell pulled down four rebounds. Jesiah Jones also collected two steals off the bench.

Marian was outscored from the three-point arc, 15-3, and the foul line, 13-5.

Sophs: The Spartans (3-2) squandered a big second-half lead in a 58-56 loss to Iowa City West.

Frosh: Marian prevailed in a nonconference test over Joliet Central, 46-37.
