Spartans capture 11th place at IHSA state tournament
Marian Catholic notched its best finish in school history, as the Spartans shot a two-day total of 662 to capture 11th place in the IHSA Class AA state tournament at The Den in Bloomington. Mike Vanover's 78-80/158 was good for 17th place in the state.
The Spartans also got scoring from Ben Nichele (164), Joe Barker (168) and Ryan Maksimik (172).
Spartans (2nd place) earn berth in IHSA state tourney
Joe Barker carded a 73 on Tuesday at Balmoral Woods Golf Course in the Bremen Sectional, leading Marian Catholic to a second-place tie and a berth in this weekend's IHSA Class AA state tournament at The Den at Fox Creek in Bloomington. Ben Nichele and Mike Vanover each added a 75 for the Spartans, while Ryan Maksimik carded 80.
Normal University High won the sectional with a 293, while Lockport and Marian tied for second with 303. The state tourney is held on Friday and Saturday in Bloomington.
