Marian´s Lauren Lacey defends against Fenwick in Saturday night´s third place contest.

Spartans win Doug Bruno team camp title at Benedictine
LISLE- Marian Catholic´s varsity squad completed the summer on Aug. 1 by compiling an 8-1 record and sweeping the elimination tournament to capture first place at the Doug Bruno team camp at Benedictine University.
Senior Skye Johnson earned a Gavin MVP honor in the camp, while seniors Keisha Collins won a Sophie Raffa "Love It" award and Ashley Hluska earned a Kathleen Meyer Grabeman "No Retreat, No Surrender" award.
The Spartans toppled ESCC rival Carmel in the championship contest and also garnered tournament victories over Stevenson and Montini.

Marian (27-8) runs out of energy in the end
NORMAL- Marian Catholic got an opportunity to avenge an ESCC one-point setback to Fenwick when the teams met in the third place game of the Class AA IHSA state tournament on Saturday night.
The Spartans (27-8) jumped to an early eight-point lead at Illinois State University's Redbird Arena, but coming off a semifinal loss to eventual state champion Naperville Central hours earlier, they ran out of gas and fell to the Friars, 69-50.
Nevertheless, Marian brought home its sixth state trophy in history, the second fourth-place variety since softball in the middle 1980s. The Spartans have played seven state games at ISU in three years, the lone Class AA team in the state to do so.
Minnesota-bound senior Lauren Lacey led Marian in the third-place contest with 28 points and eight rebounds. Brea Banks added nine points and eight rebounds, while Keisha Collins and Skye Johnson each collected two assists.
The campaign also ended outstanding careers for seniors Megan Cleary, Ashley Stanicek and Lauren Woods, who helped lead Marian to a 56-12 record the last two years.
Lacey, the school's all-time basketball leading scorer, concluded her career as a varsity starter with an 87-14 mark as the team's only returning starter this year. Marian had graduated nine seniors last year, but still achieved the unlikely three-peat to state.

The Marian sophs (20-4) topped Queen of Peace, 43-36, as Melanie Moore had 15 points and nine rebounds, Devin London had 12 points and four steals, Katy Clark added six steals, Kristen Rueth had four rebound and five steals, and Danielle Pillon added four steals.
The Frosh A (18-5) dropped a 29-27 overtime decision to Carmel despite seven points each from Caitlin Waldron (four steals) and Ashlee Pinto (five rebounds). Patti Grossi added four points and six assists, while Jen Borowczak had four points. The B squad (9-6) topped the Corsairs, 36-28, behind 15 points from Julia Schumake, 12 points from Courtney Oakes and four rebounds from Amanda Phillips.

Marian´s Brea Banks goes up strong against Naperville Central´s Candace Parker in the second semifinal game today.

Marian (27-7) falls short in comeback vs. Naperville Central

NORMAL- Skye Johnson scored all of her 13 points in the second half as Marian Catholic staged a furious comeback, but the Spartans saw there dream of a state title ended by the same team as last year with a 56-44 setback to Naperville Central Saturday in the IHSA Class AA state semifinals.

Marian (27-7) trailed by a 35-19 margin at halftime, as it shot just 26 percent from the floor. The Spartans cut the margin to 10 on a couple occasions in the fourth quarter, but couldn't avoid falling to 1-1 in state semifinal contests.
Lauren Lacey (10 rebounds) and Ashley Hluska (five rebounds) each added nine points for Marian, while Brea Banks added eight. Johnson, who was nine of 10 from the foul line, also dished out two assists. Casey Taylor finished with five rebounds and three steals.
Marian limited Tennessee-bound standout Candace Parker to 16 points, but two other Redhawks also hit double figures. Naperville Central battles New Trier tonight for its second straight state title, while Marian will take on Fenwick in the third-place game at 6:30 p.m.
The Spartans also finished at 26 from the field for the game, while hitting only one of seven from beyond the three-point arc.
