Marian's Sloan commits to University of Illinois
Marian Catholic High School junior Samantha Sloan has made a verbal commitment to continue her golf career on scholarship at the University of Illinois.
The women’s school record holder for both an 18-hole (70 round) and 9-hole (33) score, Sloan has helped lead Marian to a second-place IHSA state tournament finish in 2005 and a fourth-place state finish in 2006.
She has qualified for the state tournament individually each year, improving steadily with finishes of 68th, 11th and fourth. Along with an individual sectional championship in 2006, Sloan has also won three consecutive IHSA regional crowns and three straight East Suburban Catholic Conference titles.
“When I visited the campus, I realized that the University of Illinois has everything that I could ever want in a university,” Sloan explained. “Coach Renee Slone is a wonderful person and her career in collegiate golf, as well as the LPGA Tour, will bring great success to the Illini Golf Program. I look forward to the challenges that will be presented to me in college golf and I am excited to continue my career at the University of Illinois.”
The Fighting Illini recently capped off its fall season by setting the school 54-hole round record with an 890 at The Shootout at the Legends in Franklin, Ind.

 OCT. 14: Sammi Sloan shot 74-77/151 to finish fourth in the state overall, leading Marian Catholic to a fourth-place team finish in the Class AA IHSA state tournament in Makanda. Marian owns two Top 4 finishes in the last two years (2nd in 2005).
The Spartans totaled 671 for two days, finishing behind only Normal University High (636), Hinsdale Central (650) and Edwardsville (670).
Meg Gilley added a 170 for Marian, Ann Vrdolyak carded 172 and Lauren Pascarella 178.
Varsity record: 13-0. ESCC: 8-0.
