Symphonic Band champs, still perfect in State of Art
Feb. 20- The Marian Catholic Symphonic Band earned the Grand Championship on Saturday at the 36th Annual State of the Art Band Competition hosted at Marian, remaining undefeated among Catholic bands since the competition's inception in 1981. Marian also captured Best Percussion, Brass and Woodwinds in class.
All three Marian Bands performed in the Knights of Columbus-sponsored competition, which featured a total of 20 bands from 12 Chicago area Catholic schools. Eight represent Marian Band at All-State Convention
Eight Marian Catholic Band students were selected to represent the region at the Illinois Music Educators All-State Convention at Peoria in late January. Those students included Chrishon Campbell, Amir Ghazaleh, Haley Henning, Dorothy Hodson, John LaValle, Sarah Lisak, Doug Nunes and Emmanuel Ogunlana.
Students had the opportunity to work with university band and orchestra directors and perform with the best band, orchestra and choir students from each region across the state. Previously, 15 Marian Band Members had been selected to the All-District Band.
Marian Band BOA Class 2A National Champion, 8th overall
The Marian Catholic High School Marching Band won the Class 2A National Championship and captured eighth place overall among 95 schools at the Bands of America Grand National Finals on Nov. 14 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Marian scored 90.90 in the Finals round.
In addition to winning the Class 2A championship (determined in semifinals), the Marian Band earned 2A top honors for Outstanding Music Performance, Outstanding Visual Performance and Outstanding General Effect.
Marian made its record 32nd appearance in the Grand National Finals and was the lone Illinois Band to reach the semifinals. The Spartan Band has won a record seven Grand National Championships, the last coming in 2000.
The Marian Band also won its 36th consecutive Illinois Marching Band state championship in Class on Oct. 17 at Illinois State University, as well as winning its seventh straight overall Grand Championship at ISU and 15th overall. Marian recently captured third place in the BOA Super Regionals at Indianapolis, including a first place in Class AA.

The Marian Catholic High School Marching Band captured its 36th consecutive Illinois State University state marching class title on Oct. 17, also topping 44 other bands to win the overall championship. Also a winner in Class 3A for Best Music, Best Marching and Best Overall Effect, Marian's overall championship at ISU was its 17th overall and seventh in a row.
Marian also won the Class 2A championship at the Bands of America Super Regional on Nov. 24 in Indianapolis, capturing third place overall among 64 bands. Marian won Best Music in the overall competition and was first place in Class 2A for Best Music, Best Marching and Best General Effect.
The Marian Band will next target the Bands of America Grand Nationals on Nov. 13-15 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
Marian captures 10th Place at 2014 BOA Grand Nationals
The Marian Catholic High School Marching Band, one of only 12 schools in the nation to reach the finals of the Bands of America Grand Nationals this weekend, captured 10th Place overall with an 87.45 score on Nov. 15 at the Lucas Oil Dome in Indianapolis. More than 25,000 fans were onhand for the finals after the competitors were narrowed down from 96 starting on Wednesday.
Marian also earned second place in Class AA at BOA Grand Nationals and captured the E'spirit de Corps Award, an honor that distinguishes the band displaying exceptional pride, spirit and professionalism throughout the weekend.
The band’s show this year was entitled Rapture of the Deep. The show tells the story of deep sea divers who get to the bottom of the ocean and meet strange creatures who eventually help them reach the surface again. The show features the music of Nigel Clarke, John Mackey and Michael Giacchino. British composer Nigel Clarke has expressed his excitement that the Marian Band is performing his piece Earthrise in their show. He has been actively following the bands progress this season through social media and congratulated the band on its success through his personal Facebook page.
The Marian Band also won its 35th consecutive Illinois Marching Band state championship in Class on Oct. 27 at Illinois State University, as well as winning its sixth straight overall Grand Championship at ISU and 14th overall. Marian recently captured third place in the BOA Super Regionals at Indianapolis, including a first place in Class AA.
Making its record 31st appearance in the BOA Grand Nationals (the longest streak by far), the Marian Band has won a record seven Grand National Championships, the last coming in 2000. The Spartan Band was the lone Catholic band among the 12 Finals qualifiers, as well as the lone representative from Illinois.
15 selected to Illinois Music Educators' All-District Band
Fifteen Marian Catholic Band members were selected to the Illinois Music Educators' All-District Band on Nov. 22 at the festival held at Lincoln-Way West High School.
