1998 Concert Season

The concert season at Marian is of great importance to us. We consider it our "bread and butter". We feel that there should be a good balance between marching and concert season, instead of a preference for one or the other.

We have three concert bands at Marian Catholic, based on experience and age. The Symphonic Band is the most advanced group, playing literature representing the Grade 6 level of difficulty. The Concert Band is the next level group, playing literature representing the Grades 4, 5, and 6 level of difficulty. The Cadet Band is made up of all freshmen in the Marian band program. While all freshmen have the opportunity to audition for one of the upper level groups, they must also play in the Cadet Band as well. We feel it is essential that they develop friendship and identity by staying together their first year here at Marian.

Here is a list of some of the literature we performed that year in each band:

Symphonic Band:

  • Masquerade - Vincent Persichetti
  • Hammersmith - Gustav Holst
  • Down a Country Lane - Aaron Copland
  • Fanfare and Elegy March - Roger Nixon
  • Fiesta del Pacifico - Roger Nixon
  • Lincolnshire Posy - Percy Grainger
  • Concerto in F - George Gershwin
  • Festive Overture - Dmitri Shotakovich/trans. Donald Hunsberger

Concert Band:

  • Earle of Oxford¹s March - William Byrd/arr. Gordon Jacob
  • Incantation and Dance - John Barnes Chance
  • Variants on a Medeval Tune - Norman Dello Joio
  • Irish Tune from County Derry - Percy Grainger
  • Dance of the Jesters - P.I Tchaikovsky/arr. Ray Cramer

Cadet Band:

  • Brighton Beach - William Latham
  • Masque - Francis McBeth
  • Flight of the Pegasus - David Schaeffer
  • Air for Band - Frank Erickson
  • Dinosaurs!! - Daniel Buckvich
