The third season of the Marian Catholic Winterguard has gotten off to a great start. Jennifer Leseth, colorguard designer and instructor for Marian, creates and teaches the show, with assistance from Debbie Wiles and Carry May.
The five and a half minute show entitled "Hip Hop Pinball" is comprised from the song What Is Hip by Tower of Power. "Hip Hop Pinball" is an action-packed simulation pinball game with the winterguard girls as the pinballs and lots of props including flippers, a ramp, and bumpers.
The Winterguard competes in the Scholastic Open Class. Marian will travel to different locations in Illinois to Indianapolis, Indiana to Dayton, Ohio for competitions. The biggest competition for Marian this year is the Winter Guard World Championships WGI in Dayton, Ohio which is April 15-18. Last year at WGI, their first time, the Winterguard made it to semi-finals.
Lots of practice for Winterguard is a must because a lot of hard work goes into performing well. Marian practices about 10 to 11 hours a week not including shows on the weekends. Practice can include anything from dance to weapon technique to learning a new flag feature. "Winterguard is such a challenge. It has taught me many lessons such as responsibility, time management, and dedication. All of the hard work definitely pays off in the long run." - Josina Cunningham, Senior. |
