Our show for the 1996 marching season was entitled Music of the Sea, Earth, and Sky. It proved to be a very difficult show, but very fun (all 105 sets worth!). The opener was entitled "Sun Paints Rainbows on the Vast Waves" by David Bedford. It is a piece that reflects imagery of the sea, the sun setting over the horizon, and life under the water. There were many single and multiple eighth motives which traded from one section of the band to another, at fast tempos, moving all around the field. It even included tuned wine bottles! An ensemble nightmare, but we pulled it off.
The second number was a ballad entitled "Heart of the Morn" by H. Owen Reed. It is from a suite called Touch of the Earth from the operetta Peter Holman's Dream. A truly beautiful piece of music that we're surprised we haven't heard other bands do. We have heard many choirs perform this piece (that's where we got the idea).
The closer was a well known work by Francis McBeth entitled "Through Countless Halls of Air". Our interpretation was from a small portion of the first movement and most of the third movement. "Countless Halls" proved to be an exciting and driving force to the end of the show, which included a dynamic drum feature as well. It was the piece of music that an audience "could grab onto" and be a part of.
We hope we created an intriguing and innovative show that the members, alums, friends, and fans of the Marian band can be proud of! In retrospect, the band played very well and enjoyed a new and wonderful experience which is now part of our fond memories of the 1996 marching season. |
