For nearly two decades, the Marian Catholic High School Band has been considered one of the premier high school bands in the United States. In addition to a record of achievements that is unmatched, Marianīs Band is viewed by many as a model of what can and should be. The Band is a tribute to Marianīs and the Springfield Dominican Sistersī dedication to education, and to the idea that the arts are a vital component in a truly complete human. It has been a great privilege and pleasure for all involved to build and maintain the program at such a high level. One of our greatest joys has been to achieve at such a high level while working within comparatively modest means. God has always provided what we have needed to continue to grow. We have taken great pride in performing in forums where other groups has the best equipment money could buy and we, with our mixed batch of used and repaired equipment, we considered the "state of the art."
The goal of Command Performance was not to win honors or recognition, but to bring our wonderful young people to an appreciation of music, friendship, discipline, hard work, and caring within a diverse community.
The real rewards, of course, are the ones that are lived, not won: the generous mentoring and modeling of the Band parents who give so much of their time, talent, and treasure to the program, and the bonds of support and growth of leadership of our "scholars with a (musical) soul." Along the way, the public honors have come as well -- recognition now unparalleled for any band in the nation, as State and Grand National Champions, as invitees to prestigious workshops, concerts, and the 2001 Presidential Inaugural Parade.
In sharing Command Performance with us, you affirmed the operation of the Marian Catholic High School program that does so much on a shoestring. Ours is "human capital," a celebration of beauty that relies on people: the beauty of the human spirit as it becomes one with the Spirit of God in and through music. We continue to you rely on you, as a friend of the Marian Catholic High School Band, to keep us in tune, to support young people who study and serve, parade and perform, march and mentor each other.
