About the Choirs
The Marian Catholic High School’s choral program is comprised of three academic ensembles and one extracurricular ensemble. The first ensemble is Concert Choir which is Marian’s beginning choir. The students that perform in this choir are first year choral students and are new to the program. The Concert Choir focuses on the introduction of blend, pitch, and proper breathing technique. Along with these techniques, students in this choir acquire the beginning skills they need to sing confidently together and alone.
From Concert Choir, students progress to the Spartan Choir. Spartan Choir is a mixed choir of Sopranos, Altos, Tenors and Basses. Along with a continued study of the skills acquired in Concert Choir, these students focus on exploring more challenging literature and developing their musicality through sight-reading and music theory.
Varsity Choir is an audition based choir and can either be a mixed (S.A.T.B.) choir or a women’s choir. This year Varsity Choir will be a women’s choir that will perform advanced S.S.A.A. literature, both a cappella and accompanied. This choir is frequently assessed on individual vocal skills, which demonstrates and applies knowledge of advance musical concepts. Varsity Choir demonstrates advanced tone production, individually as well as group musicianship, and choral techniques are stressed.
Outside of the classroom, many of the choral students participate in private voice and piano lessons, in the musicals, and in competing at the IHSA Solo and Ensemble Contest. In addition, Marian Catholic also offers an extracurricular vocal jazz and a cappella ensemble. Auditions are required to join this ensemble.
All of Marian Catholic High School’s choirs perform at four concerts a year. The choral program presents a Fall Choral Concert (Thursday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m.), a Christmas Choral Concert at (Tuesday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m.), a "Music in Our School’s Month" Concert (Tuesday, March 1 at 7 p.m.), and a Spring Pops Concert (Tuesday, May 3 at 7 p.m.). In addition to these performances, the choral students also lead the entire school in song during all school masses each academic year. We also will be going on a tour to Springfield, Illinois from March 28-30.
